the job list lived in a file on one machine. that single fact capped the whole product at one copy of the app.

moving it to postgres is what let several engine copies and the render workers share one queue. a claim takes a row lock that skips rows another copy already holds, and holds a lease, so two copies never take the same job and a copy that dies releases its work. cancelling is a flag the runner polls. each account gets one turn at a time.

the honest part: this is not multi-tenancy yet. a read-only audit the same week listed sixteen places where something held in one copy's memory or on its own disk would not be seen by a second copy or a second person, and three of those were live bugs that night. today the copies are separate processes on one server sharing one disk; running on two machines is still ahead. the shared job list and the compare-and-set cloud writes are the two the audit confirmed were already right. writing this entry, i first claimed the product could "take a crowd" — reading the audit is what corrected it.
